Dr. Mann fell to his knees in front of Paa Kwesi. Tears of anguish fell down his face as he grabbed Paa Kwesi’s leg.

“Please, for the love of God, have mercy on my family,” he cried. “They are all that I have!”

“Old man, you better start thinking of how you are going to repay the money you took for your hospital!” Paa Kwesi said, and burst out laughing.

Dr. Mann was very sad

With his wife and daughter in prison, Dr. Mann became very sad. He could not work as well as he once did. Sometimes, he stayed away from the hospital for many days. He was so heartbroken. He went to Paa Kwesi’s house on many occasions to  beg him but to no avail.

And then the five years were up for him to pay back what he owed Paa Kwesi.

And again, Paa Kwesi was unforgiving.

“Your wife and daughter are still in prison,” Paa Kwesi said. “You haven’t paid my money. I can choose to take over your hospital and let you stay home, or I can choose to send you to prison to join your family. What would you like?”

Dr. Mann was horrified. He could not afford to lose his hospital. It was all that he had! And yet, if he went to prison, how could he work to repay the amount he and his family owed?

Many people begged Paa Kwesi on behalf of Dr. Mann, but the rich young man would not listen. He had no compassion in him; he was wicked at heart!

Thus, Dr. Mann had no choice than to let Paa Kwesi take over his hospital. Paa Kwesi changed the name of the hospital to P. K. Hospital. He brought many doctors from the big city to work in the hospital.

One evening, Dr. Mann went to see Paa Kwesi.

“Please, you know I don’t have any work now,” Dr. Mann said. “My wife and daughter are in prison, and I am dying of hunger. The people still need me! If you have taken the hospital from me, please allow me to work in the hospital for a salary so that I can feed myself and save for my family!”

“Old man, you shall never work in the hospital again, so forget it!” Paa Kwesi said, and threw Dr. Mann out of his house.

Dr. Mann became an unhappy man…and that was when hatred entered his good heart. He hated Paa Kwesi so much that he wished he would die! If he had had his own way, he would have strangled Paa Kwesi to death!

Dr. Mann found work at the health post in the next village. Each day, he sat on his old bicycle and went to the village, returning to Adiembra deep in the night. The money he got was not enough, but at least he did not go hungry. He wanted to save enough so that he could pay back the loans.

One evening, Dr. Mann was returning from work. He was riding his bicycle. He was very tired becasue he had worked for many hours at the health post, and he was hungry.

As he was pushing his bicycle up a sharp incline, he heard a terrible sound from the other side of the hill. There was the screeching of tyres, a terrible crashing sound, and the continuous blaring sound of a car’s horn.

It was evident that a car had had an accident!

Dr. Mann let his bicycle fall to the ground, and then he raced up the hill with his heart beating with fear. When he reached the crest of the hill, he saw to his horror that a white car had crashed off the road and was lying on its roof in a ditch beside the road. The horn was still blaring, and there were sparks from under the bonnet!

The car might explode at any moment!

Dr. Mann ran hard to the car. An arm was poking out of the driver’s window. Dr. Mann bent and looked in.

Imagine his utmost shock when he saw that the driver was Paa Kwesi!

His worst enemy was trapped in the car!

Dr. Mann looked at the sparks still crackling under the bonnet. There was petrol everywhere. All it would take was a single spark, and the car would explode, killing Paa Kwesi instantly!

Paa Kwesi was badly hurt. There was blood all over his face. He opened his eyes…and saw Dr. Mann.

“Please!” Paa Kwesi whispered in great pain. “Please help me!”

Dr. Mann looked at Paa Kwesi with hatred. Here was the young man responsible for all the pain in his life! This man had been so cruel to him! Dr. Mann had wished he would die, and now here he was, weak and hurt! This was the perfect chance for revenge. He could leave Paa Kwesi here to die…and it would be so good!

For a moment, Dr. Mann looked at Paa Kwesi with hatred, and slowly tears welled up in Paa Kwesi’s eyes. He could see the hatred in Dr. Mann’s eyes, and he knew Dr. Mann would leave him to die!

Dr. Mann was a good man at heart…and he was also a doctor! His whole life, he had been saving lives. He knew that even if Paa Kwesi had been cruel to him, he could not repay evil with evil.

Dr. Mann took a deep sigh. All his hatred had vanished.

He forced the door open and gently eased out the wounded man. The sparks crackled, and now a little fire had begun in the shrubs, quickly coming toward the car. Dr. Mann knew he was in danger. If that fire got to the car, he would also die in the explosion, but he did not let Paa Kwesi go. He picked up the younger man and began to race from the car.

The car suddenly exploded! The impact threw Dr. Mann to the ground. Paa Kwesi turned his head weakly and looked at the burning car, and then he looked at Dr. Mann.

“You saved my life…thank you!” Paa Kwesi whispered weakly.

Dr. Mann knew that Paa Kwesi was hurt seriously and needed medical attention. He tore off his shirt and picked up the little first aid box he kept on his bicycle, and gave first aid to Paa Kwesi. He then put Paa Kwesi on his bicycle. Dr. Mann cycled gently toward Adiembra.

Luckily, he met a late taxi, and he put Paa Kwesi in it. He took Paa Kwesi to his old hospital.

None of the doctors was around, and so Dr. Mann attended to Paa Kwesi’s wounds himself. Paa Kwesi had lost a lot of blood and needed blood transfusion, but his blood type was not available in the blood bank.

Paa Kwesi’s friends heard of the accident, and many of them came to the hospital. Many of them were tested, but none of them had the same blood group as the young man since he can only take blood from someone with his blood type.

Finally, Dr. Mann went to the lab to be tested.

His blood matched Paa Kwesi’s!

Dr. Mann donated his blood, and it was used to transfuse Paa Kwesi!

Everybody was shocked at what Dr. Mann had done; they knew how cruelly Paa Kwesi had treated him.
