THE GIRL WITH THE THIRD EYE
EPISODE 2
Rose forgot all about Aunt Linda’s box.
Late that afternoon, after she closed from school and reached home, she found out that something terrible had happened!
Daddy was crying silently!
Rose had never seen her father crying before, and it scared her to find him in such pain.
“What’s wrong, Daddy?” she asked. “Where’s Mommy?”
“Mommy has been arrested by the police!” her father said sadly.
“Why?” Rose shouted and began to weep. “What has she done?”
Daddy explained that Mommy had gone to wash the clothes of the Martins family the past Saturday. Mrs. Martins said she left an expensive diamond necklace in the pocket of one of her dresses by mistake. Mommy had washed the dress, and the necklace was missing, and Mrs. Martins told the police that Mommy stole the necklace.
The police therefore came and arrested Rose’s mother.
“Mommy is not a thief!” Rose cried.
“Nobody believes her,” father said in a shaky voice. “The police locked her up. I’m going to the house of the Martins to plead with them. My wife didn’t steal that necklace!”
“I’m coming with you, Daddy,” Rose said.
The house of the Martins was huge and beautiful. A servant led them into the expensively-furnished living-room.
There were two policemen and a young man in the living-room. Rose knew the young man. His name was Jacob, and he was the only son of the Martins. Rose had met him when she accompanied Mommy on some Saturdays to help her wash their clothes.
Jacob was sitting in front of the television. He was playing a football video game.
Rose sat down beside her father. The servant went to call Mr. and Mrs. Martins.
Rose suddenly realised that she was still holding her school bag, and it was only then that she remembered the strange black box Aunt Linda had given to her.
Rose took out the box and opened it.
It contained Aunt Linda’s old spectacles.
Also, in the box was a small folded paper. Although she was sad, Rose smiled fondly when she saw the gift the dear old lady had left her.
She put the spectacles in her laps and opened the folded paper.
It was covered with Aunt Linda’s tiny, slanted handwriting. Rose read the letter as they waited.
Hello Rose Angel.
I’m very sorry I could not say good-bye to you personally. I’m really indebted to you for all the good things you did for me. Thank you for bringing my daughter and grandchildren back to me. I have nothing to give to you to repay your kindness. Please accept my spectacles. It was given to me many years ago by a kind woman. The spectacles hold special gifts for special people with special hearts. You have a heart of gold, and it’s my prayer that it will show you its special gifts.
Your true friend, Aunt Linda.
Rose put the letter back in the box and held up the old spectacles.
Mr. and Mrs. Martins entered just then. Father got up immediately and fell to his knees in front of Mrs. Martins. Tears fell down his cheeks as he begged Mrs. Martins to release his wife from jail.
“Your wife is a thief!” Mrs. Martins yelled at Daddy. “We have always been good to her, but her greediness made her steal my diamond necklace!”
“It must have gotten lost somewhere else!” Daddy cried. “My wife is innocent. She’s not a thief!”
“Get out of here, man, before I order the policemen to arrest you too!” Mr. Martins shouted. “If she doesn’t bring the necklace, she’ll spend a long time in prison!”
Tears of pain formed in Rose’s eyes again. Her hands shook, and without knowing what she was doing she put on Aunt Linda’s old spectacles.
She was looking at Jacob when she put on the spectacles, and suddenly Rose screamed shrilly, and snatched the spectacles off her face with sudden fear!
Everybody in the room stared at Rose. Her scary scream had shocked them all!
Rose could not stop shaking! She was scared. Something terrible had happened when she put on Aunt Linda’s spectacles.
Daddy rushed to her and held her shoulders with concern on his face.
“Rosie, dearest, what is it? What happened?”
Rose tried to speak, but nothing came out. She did not know how to explain to Daddy that when she put on the old spectacles, she had seen not one, but two images of Jacob playing the video game! It had been so real! It was as if Jacob had a twin brother beside him!
She tried to smile at her father as she fought to control her fear.
“Sorry, Daddy,” she said softly. “I didn’t mean to disturb you! I just don’t want you too to be arrested!”
“Oh, my daughter,” Daddy said and hugged her.
After a while, he let her go and went to kneel in front of the Martins again.
Shaking, Rose put on the spectacles again.
She did not look at Jacob, but she looked at the other people in the room.
There were no double images of any of them. Maybe she had imagined it all, she thought as she turned and looked at Jacob once again!
It happened again!
There were two images of Jacob!
This time Rose did not scream. She remembered what Aunt Linda had written:
The spectacles hold special gifts for special people with special hearts!
This was what it meant! The spectacles indeed had special magical powers! Why then, did Jacob have a second image? Why only him?
