FINAL EPISODE
Looking very miserable, Ato brought out the money he had taken from the bag to buy toys.
“Ato Jacobson,” his father shouted fiercely. “You stole money? How many times have I warned you never to take something that does not belong to you?”
“Hold it, Mr. Jacobson, please,” Auntie Fuseina said. “You must listen to this. He thought he conjured the money. He didn’t know you left it there.”
“What are you talking about?” Mr. Jacobson asked.
Auntie Fuseina narrated what the boys had told her.
Mr. Jacobson smiled and then laughed even though he was still angry.
“Listen, boys, there’s no such thing as magic,” he said gently.
“The magician has many wands. He uses illusion to make you think it is magic, but it is not magic; it is just illusions and tricks he has perfected. You two could be in serious trouble for stealing the magician’s wand, though.”
Ato hanged his head with shame and sadness.
“Bawa warned me,” he said shamefully. “I now know it is bad to steal. I’ll never take something that does not belong to me again.”
“Come on, boys, I’ll go with you and return the magician’s wand to him,” Mr. Jacobson said.
They found the magician loading his items into a huge van.
When he heard what Mr. Jacobson said, he burst out laughing so hard that tears fell down his cheeks.
“Boys, it never pays to steal,” he said gently. “You see, what I do is not actual magic, but tricks and illusion! My assistants and I do things to make you believe it is magic, but it is not. The wand has no magic; it is just a black stick with metal caps at each end, nothing else. It has no power whatsoever. I’ve practised and become good at these tricks, that is all. So, go to school, study hard, and lead honest lives, and you will be rich in future!”
He opened a shiny metallic container, and they saw that it was filled with magic wands.
He smiled and gave the wand back to Ato.
“You keep this wand, boy,” he said. “Let it remind you never to steal again!”
“I’ll never steal again,” Ato said miserably.
