EPISODE 2

Finally, with Paa Kwesi safely in the ward and out of harm’s way, Dr. Mann went to his house. His wife and daughter were still in prison, but he felt good at what he had done in saving Paa Kwesi’s life.

A week after that, he returned home from the village health post, tired and worn out…and found a wonderful surprise waiting for him!

His wife and daughter were home!

Dr. Mann let his bicycle fall and ran forward, hooting with joy. He embraced his wife and daughter, and the three of them cried uncontrollably. Finally, when they parted, Dr. Mann could not hide his pleasure.

“What happened?” he asked incredulously.

“We were released, Father,” Esi replied. “Paa Kwesi let them release us. He also sent word that he was still weak in the hospital, but it is urgent that the three of us see him at the hospital immediately!”

“It can wait!” Dr. Mann said. “If I had not helped him, would he have set you free? Let us enjoy this great day together!”

“My dear, let us go and see him, and then we can come back and have a happy re-union!” Mrs. Mann said.

Thus, Dr. Mann and his family went to see Paa Kwesi in the hospital.

There was a kind-looking middle-aged man in the ward with Paa Kwesi.

Paa Kwesi was sitting up in his hospital bed. He looked strong…but his face was very sad. As soon as he saw Dr. Mann and his family, Paa Kwesi burst into deep tears. Dr. Mann and his family were shocked at how heartbroken Paa Kwesi was.

Mrs. Mann was filled with compassion for the young man, and she took him into her arms to console him. This even made Paa Kwesi weep harder, and he clung to Mrs. Mann desperately.

“I didn’t know!” he wept. “Oh, please forgive me!”

The Manns looked perplexed. They did not know what Paa Kwesi meant.

After a long time, Paa Kwesi calmed down. His eyes were red with weeping. He looked at the man in the room and nodded.

“Please, tell them,” Paa Kwesi said, and his lips trembled.

The middle-aged man cleared his throat.

“My name is Joe Eduafo,” the man began. “I am the owner of Eduafo Investigations.”

“Oh, I’ve heard about you,” Esi cried. “Didn’t your outfit investigate the Amadon Killings last year, and caught the elusive murderer?”

Mr. Eduafo smiled modestly. “Yes, we did. Well, about why I am here. Mr. Paa Kwesi hired me. You see, Paa Kwesi grew up in an orphanage where he went through many hardships. He was determined to make it in life, and so he studied very hard.”

“In an orphanage?” Mrs. Mann cried. “That is terrible! Why, did his parents die?”

“No,” Mr. Eduafo said. “One night the people in the orphanage woke up to loud screams from a child of one-year-old who had been left in front of the orphanage. There was a little bag with him saying his name was Paa Kwesi. The orphanage took him in, and tried to find his parents, but to no avail. He therefore grew up in the orphanage. When he became rich, he hired me to find his parents. We did not have anything to go on except the cloth he was wrapped in when he was found at the orphanage so many years ago. There was a note pinned to the cloth saying it belonged to his parents. The paper on which the note was written was from a hospital in the city called the Palladium Hospital!”

Dr. and Mrs. Mann exchanged looks at the name of the hospital.

“I see you know of Palladium Hospital,” said Eduafo.

“Yes,” Mrs. Mann said sadly. “I gave birth to my first child in the Palladium Hospital many years ago.”

”It was a boy,” Esi said sadly. “The brother I never had. The nurses said he died, and they buried him.”

Eduafo took a faded cloth from his briefcase.

“This is the cloth which was wrapped around Paa Kwesi when he was taken to the orphanage,” he said. “This was the cloth on which the note was pinned!”

Dr. and Mrs. Mann screamed when they saw the cloth.

“That w-was m-mine!” Mrs. Mann cried. “I had…had it the night my baby boy died!”

“He didn’t die!” said Eduafo. “When you gave birth, there was a bad nurse in the Palladium Hospital called Ruby whose-“

“Ruby!” Dr. Mann screamed. “I remember her! She was so nice to us! I bought many presents for her!”

“Yes,” Eduafo said. “Her sister was married but was barren. Ruby stole your son and gave him to her sister. She then told you that your son died at birth!”

The Manns stared at Eduafo with mounting horror; they could not believe what they were hearing.

“Unfortunately, Ruby’s sister and her husband died in an accident when the little boy was only a year old. Ruby did not know what to do. She panicked. She was scared she would be caught and punished for the evil thing she did, and so she sent the little boy to the orphanage. I was able to trace her to a village far away from here. She confessed that the little boy’s parents were a Dr. and Mrs. Mann. Your son did not die. Esi Mann, your brother is not dead. I present him to you. He is no other than the Paa Kwesi you see here!”

Tears fell down all their faces.

“Oh, I had no love at the orphanage!” said Paa Kwesi. “I was treated so badly, and I grew up thinking my parents did not love me and that was why they took me to the orphanage. I became very wicked…thinking that by being cruel I was punishing my parents. And now look at what I did! I imprisoned my own mother and sister and caused my own father such pain! Oh, please forgive me!”

“My son!” Dr. Mann whispered with trembling lips. “I almost left you to die…oh, my son!”

“My brother!” Esi whispered.

They all embraced, crying loudly.

Mr. Eduafo left the happy family quietly to enjoy their unbelievable re-union! He had no doubts whatsoever that everything was going to be alright for the Mann family who have found each other.

He shook his head in wonder.

The world was indeed full of surprises!

THE END

The world is indeed full of surprises, friends!

If Dr. Mann had let his anger get the better of him, and left Paa Kwesi to die, how bitterly he would have regretted it!

Paa Kwesi’s bitterness caused him to be so cruel to his own family!

This should warn all of us to be good and kind all the time, and to eschew bitterness and any sense of vengeance for the wrongs done us!
